Is variety helpful to consumers?

Given that consumers differ in preferences, product variety is seen as beneficial to consumers as a wider option while making purchases of a product having varieties. Do you approve this type of preferences?

Well, I feel that consumers can be confused if they are given wider choices for the product.

Example 1: I can’t choose from 30 flavours of brand x ice-cream, so I’ll just choose brand y which offers only vanilla.

Example 2 : I cant decided which mutual fund to invest among so many choices. Hence I wish to do it later.
What is your opinion towards the above mentioned topic?.
