Is Twitter even relevant for an online business anymore?

With all the people wanting to just get followers, what is the point of tweeting to people that care less about you or your products?

I saw accounts with a couple million followers, but I when I went to check those accounts, a ton of the followers are either fake, or absolutely irrelevant to what those accounts are all about.

Without going into much detail, are any of you here use Twitter as an advertising platform? But the main question is, do you make any $$ off of it? I mean, you really make good $$ from Twitter.

Twitter is definitely the number one choice when it comes to advertising online business and getting high amounts of traffic when compared to another site like Facebook. This is because a single tweet can be added to the top of thousands of peoples feeds at a single retweet, which in turn causes more retweets and so on...

Well, you either have to be spammy as hell or have real followers.

Spamming works too but there is more hassle with it... (although it may be quicker than building a good community)

Find real followers interested in your niche domain and then keep building up slowly
Hash tagsw such as #follow back and #follow will get you many followers but they will only be causing nuisance on your wall.
Get good followers by stalking(ONLY on Twitter :) ) your competitors twitters account and see what their followers are interested in and try to get in the relevant lists.

    TWITTER IS AWESOME!

Thank you for the reply, guys. Let's say (hypothetically) I have 10,000 real followers who are interested in my niche, will these many followers get me good traffic and/or sales? Or should it be in the hundreds of thousands, or even millions of followers to see any impact on traffic or sales?

I'll use myself as an example. I have ~10,000 followers, all who are about 14-21 years old and interested in music, fashion etc... If I posted a tweet bigging up my music site or online clothing shop at about 6-9pm GMT (Primetime) Then I'd expect at least 3,000+ hits to my site.

If you have real followers, it will work for you. The more such followers, the more exposure you get.
If most of you followers are just 'follows back', these are 100% junk, and you should expect many unfollow from them.

I think the question is valid. Twitter is effective for a business only when a lot of conditions are met

I can't speak as a person who got alot of twitter experience cause I dont use it much (16 followers) but I can say that from my experience with other social media (facebook, linkedIn) its really worth only getting quality followers. I opened up my facebook page and I gained 1000's of likes in a few days time but really it ment nothing besides me not being able to see the comments that really mattered.

Unless you get some kind of profit for the amount of follows and not from the people that follows then I would stick to the quality followers.

Well honestly for content is relevant but for a small business? i will says not!!!

I was investing money in twitter adversities and i have to tell you, the conversation rate are really irrelevants.

    Also for example:

actually a trending topic in USA have a cost of 200k a day, in Brazil i think is 15k and UK is 30k but you know the engage number or ratio? well is crazy u can reach a lot of people and get from 0 to unlimited numbers of RT, but what about the avarage? do you know the avarage is between 3% to 8% maximum and if you dont trust on that i can disclosure here more info.

Honestly i think for Media Companies as a TV, Newspapers, Sports, entertainment, Shows twitter is Excelent but outside the world everything change and cant not be warranty.

lets discuss a little bit more and see where this conversation go...

Find which accounts are the best in your field and follow their followers. Usually a lot of them will end up following their fans, so you will get valid, active followers.
    Post content that people like.
I have read that Twitter users convert much higher than other social websites.
Tweet A LOT. If you think you are tweeting too much, you aren't tweeting enough.

Of course it's relevant..it's still a dope free way to reach tons of people..the bigger the reach, the better, form a marketing standpoint. there are still many interested followers/
