Is too many links too soon really a problem for Adsense sites?

With all the directory and other types of submitters out there, it is relatively easy to rapidly get links pointing to a website.

But I have also heard that too much too fast can land your site in the supplemental index for good.

    What is everyone's experience?

I don't think I've ever had a problem with too many links. Just had another post go front-page on a social site and Google is now showing 1600+ links to that page. Definitely ranks in the top five for its keywords, just a shame that its low traffic :D

Isn't supplemental more to do with duplicate content, and not numbers of backlinks?

Remember its not wrong to promote your website, getting plenty of backlinks, and sometimes fast is fine.
