if you do that all of a sudden and at once, maybe.... but if you submit to lets say 1000 directories every month, then no it won't.

You can submit as many as you can only for one reason 80% free directories take 3-6 months to index your site

that is good advice blacksnow. it doesnt matter how many you submit to because you will never be approved in the same day as all the others, so it will be like gradually increasing the link count!

Google is so smart and sophisticated, i personally believe that there is no need to have more than 35-50 directories links for your website, more than that will not get you penalized.. but it wont help your rankings too so why wasting time, money and energy for 1000 directories.. instead get 25-50 good and strong directories links, then invest the rest of your time and money in getting links from related and relevant websites, Link baiting, articles, social bookmarking..

I just ran a test. I bought the same name .com and .net domain, and submitted one to 400 directories and none for the other site. I'll see how the PR changes over the next few months and post it here on DP.

If it were bad, then people would attempt to hurt their competitors by submitting their competitors sites to a million directories overnight. It's always been said that Google doesn't punish for links pointing to you, only if you have link exchanges with bad sites will they punish you. But nowadays, who knows?
