    If the links are not from content farms and you have generated them naturally and they are of high quality and niche related as well then there is no harm.

    If the link is relevant and not artificial its ok ! even if you do link exchange with friendly sites it will not hurt your ranking.. sometimes it will not just count value for them.that is all !

    Backlinks are always beneficial as long as they are from good quality and high ranking websites. If you have too many backlinks from these kinds of websites, you may be dominating the web by now. However, too many backlinks from poor websites will hurt your website because it may appear that the links are from link farms.

    Just make your sure the sites are related to your niche. For example, doing blog commenting, make sure that you targets on blog sites that is also related to your site.

    1) Too many backlinks in too little time = VERY BAD!
    2) Loads of links in a steady span of time building at a constant rate = VERY GOOD!

    Search engine use link popularity to rank a website. So they will pay attention for the websites who are trying to increase link popularity unethically. So building too many backlinks per day will be a spam trigger.
