I guess it depends on what you mean. If you mean for getting people to click through from the search engine.. I would say both are equally important. I like to use just the keyword in my title and then a call to action in my description.

If you mean for SEO purposes.. then the title. Description doesnt really help for seo.

The thing a lot of people get confused about is that SEO is not done on a SITE level, it's done on a PAGE level.

Let me explain. You're right, most ppl link to your index/homepage. It's going to almost impossible for you to optimize your homepage, which is just ONE page, for a bunch of different keywords effectively.

Here's how you should structure your site. Make your homepage your most broad, general themed page. So, it should be talking about pet supplies in general. Optimize your homepage for a more general, more competitive term.

Then you have sub pages on your site, one page about dog supplies, one page about cat supplies, or whatever. Then optimize your sub pages for the more specific, and less competitive terms.

They are both important, when done correctly they compliments each other. This is how I like to do it, and I always get good results. The keyword should be the domain and be the title. It should also be in the description, but the description should be in the form of a headline. I normally do the META tags in 4 parts her they are: (a) Page title tags Generation. (b) META description and marketing tags. (c) Geographical target market tags. and (d) Main content suggestions.

Your title plays a bigger part in rankings than your description. You should include your main keywords in both.

    Thanks Brian

The <title> element is THE most important on-page ranking factor. Period.

The <meta name="description"> element is not even used to rank your page. It is however VERY important in that if you optimize your meta description properly, it can drastically increase the frequency with which it is shown in the SERPs as the snippet AND increase the click-thru-rate.
