Pundit probably comes from the Hindi Pandit- a title given to Jawaharlal Nehru. Pandit means somebody learned.

As we all know all the north indian languages are derived from Sanskrit. And Sanskrit is part of a group of more then 100 languages called Indo european languages. Since Sanskrit is oldest of them all, there are several words quite common among these languages.
One example of a word is NAVGATI (नवगती in Sanskrit means guidance of ships ). Similar word in english is 'to Navigate' which also means same. From this word there is a word derived called 'Nav' in Hindi meaning a boat or a ship. And the word navy has also been derived from it. Since the navigation system was first developed by the people in Indus river civilization these words have indian origin.
Wikipedia has a nice link for this discussion.
