Although I lately have read alot about SEO I still consider myself a newbie. I would like some help from you professionals.

Is this site well optimized, or have I over or under optimized?

    http://www.webpelican.com/

    Thanks

No opinion on the SEO but you should put a leaderboard ad link on top instead of the 468. It'll spread out, entice more clicks, and look natural underneath your banner. Trust me, your CTR will jump immensely.

I like the color combinations at the top, but would like to see more color in the site. As for optimization, you should use your best keyword in the <H1> tag. Currently, you have your website name. That's not good. Use <h1>Web Development</h1>, for example. Also, you could use <h2>web site development</h2> somewhere lower down.

Here are some of the top keywords I found by using Goran Nagy's "Keywords Analyzer" tool: (word order gets mangled so just re-arrange if needed) Different landing pages should be optimized for different keywords.

... Keyword ....... Searches per month (as per Overture.com)
    development web ......... 53598
    web site development .... 46458
    design development web 33658
    ecommerce web site development 5668
    development ecommerce site web 5668
    web site design development 5226
    design development site web 5226
    web site development company 2894
    company development site web 2894
    web programming 2702
    development software web 1689
    web site development software 1376
    web master resource tutorial 1407
    development site software web 1376
    web design tutorial 1326
    development ecommerce web 1214
    development services web 1131
    web site development services 1129
    development services site web 1129

    Thanks for your replies!

I do use keywords relevant to the page topic on every page of the site except the index page since I have heard it is not needed.

I have read it is common mistake to optimize your index page, but I could be wrong...

However, I have optimized it with keywords in link text and with keword phrases such as "Web tutorials" within h2 elements.

This is one of the pages to give an example: http://www.webpelican.com/internet-programming-3/xhtml/

Have I still missed something SEO-important?

    I noticed this Grammatical Error:
Browsers parsing algorithms has been better and better at displaying unstructured HTML like in the example above...

Try: "Browser ... have become better at"...

I would make your post titles into links (make slugs keywords for that page) and I would work your adsense into your text as much as possible. We read from left to right so try and have something in the upper left hand corner to grab attention, make sure it is an add! go with a banner under your header and blend adsense in. I am getting around 200 unique visits a day on my 3 blogs in my signature and making about $13 a day. I think that is pretty good. I basicly looked at what Darren Rowse was doing on his product blogs. This might not work for your subject but I don't think you are getting much out of your skyscraper (sp) on the right.
    just my 2 cents

Thanks for the tips. I belive I will try what you suggested. However, I will wait a few months to hopefully get listed by DMOZ before I put in too many ads.
I have thought about making the right skyskraper a different color. That way maybe visitors won't think the other ad links are advertising. But I am not sure it's a good idé to trick visitors...

you can waite but let me tell you I was in google by the 18th of Jan. and I launched on the 6th of jan. You are not "tricking" your readers infact google says that is the best optimization for there ads. Besides give your readers credit they are reading about Java etc. they know what your ads are! You can waite all you want but I think if you are not going to look at it like a business you are waisting your time.

By tricking visitors I was refering to making the right skyskraper a different color to make visitors belive the other google ads are not ads. That is,
use the skyskraper just to get clicks on the other ads.

I know this is allowed of course, but I am worried the site will get less return visitors and be less sticky, hence get less clicks.
I want to make money just like everyone else, and I know most adsense techniques actually are different ways of tricking(blending, stand out etc...), however, I don't want to lose usability and due that maybe visitors.

The reason I want to wait with , for example, trying a different color on the skyskraper, or putting a large rectangle on top of the main content is - as already mentioned - that I want a DMOZ editor to feel this site is not all about making money out of ads and hopefully list it. Same goes for the Yahoo Directory Editor.
Without getting listed in any of the big directories I wont get many clicks anyway.

Anyway, thanks for your advice and feel free to give some more...
