I want to know that there are many website available which redirect our site , so we get better names

for example if i have a site www.xxx.com/geocities i can make an account with www.xx.ab.co which also point to my site , so my website address become small and looks good.

My question is if we do this , can we still do good SEO,

let say i have a website on yahoo name www.geocities.com/marketingtips , now also made a domanin name www.marketingtips.8m.com (for easy to retain) and redirect it to yahoo site , so if the user type www.marketingtips.8m.com it will be redircted to www.geocities.com/marketingtips.

as www.geocities.com/marketingtips is difficutl to retain and www.marketingtips.8m.com is easy to retain so that a step to shor our url

my question is by doing this can we get a good rank in searh engines
