i dont think they will be able to beat google.. yahoo is making one more mistake.... instead they could have developed their own search engine.. microsoft is already a loser ...

I agree, they wont be able to beat Google.

The way the deal works is this.. Basically both search engines will now use the "Bing" seach tool and Both will use the Yahoo Paid search network.

So in the near future you will see that the Yahoo search engine says "Powered By Bing" or similar.

In terms of SEO, it means we need to pay a bit more attention to Bing (Microsoft) and can disgard any Yahoo related information.

    Thats my understanding anyway.

Google search results is the most relevant IMO, compare to other Search engines, that's why i'm still prefer to stick with Big G :)

There's no way to beat Google.
Collaboration bing-yahoo just dominates 35% of search engine users.

It also depends which country and niche your refering to.

In some countries Yahoo already has a massive domination (Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore etc. Figures in excess of 90% for yahoo's market share.)

Also Yahoo is more commonly used for searches in Business, Sport and News where it tends to be more up to date than Google.

But in general, if you focus on Google you wont go too far wrong.

DrewMan has some good points here. It all depends. Yahoo is already beating Google when it comes to some searches. I always search Yahoo when it comes to business and news.

If you just look at search engine business Google will win. If you look at other things that they each offer Yahoo and Microsoft are not far behind. Yahoo owns Yahoo Email, and Microsoft owns Hotmail, and both have more users than Gmail. You can look through everything else that they offer and conclude that Google is just better at search business.

I totally agree with the comment saying you'd need PR 11 to beat google. I also think that yahoo are just making one mistake after another. Microsoft are slowly loosing momentum in the OS area due to apple's advances. I think for bing it'll be a good change, in my opinion it may be better for them to work at making bing great rather than doing what they always do, throw loads of money at a project instead of building it upwards. IT's onyl a matter of time until it'll grow due to windows live and their live.com website which is a huge site.

Depends on your definition of beat. If you mean take away some market share in search from google, that is possible.

But if you mean having a larger market share then is extremely unlikely.

The google brand is too strong and the fact is search engines are free to use so most people don't have a lot of incentive to switch.

    Yes they can do this.
But it does need to take 5 years or more to replace google provided google doesn't do anything.

Which will never happen, at the rate google is going introducing new, and mostly succesful, features it will always be in front.

Microsoft has never understood the internet and I see no reason to believe they are changing. Until they open their institutional collective mind to the general principles of the internet ecosystem they will continue to spend a lot of money on ultimately doomed projects.

Agreed.. Bing is a step in the right direction and now they have bought Yahoo they are closer than they have ever been before to Google.

With Googles range of products and services they are much wider reach over the web than Yahoo / MS and so will not only attract "searchers" but also people who use products.
