Some this happens if you have a lot of websites competiting for your main keyword...

The only way to be top in SERPS for your main keyword is to build backlinks

    continously...

Build more and more quality back links using your main keyword as anchor for that link.
You will see definately good change
Well you can still place 2 more links in your sig, place your website links and make anchor as your targeted keywords.
    Thanks.

I guess we just have to keep making our sites much more competitive all the time as even our competitors are doing the same.

One of my keywords was ranked 16 from Google, then it dropped to over 50. Guess it is back to work for me.

Of course we still have to consider our competitors if we want to rank highly there.

depends on your niche.. maybe lots of webmasters are competing for same keyword,,, if thats the case you must work harder,, or choose other keywords.

One thing which is extremely important yet ignored by many people is the quality of links and not quantity of them. Even 15 links from reliable sources might be better than 2500 links from other low quality web sources.

It's usually easy to get and maintain a high postion for long-tail key word. But for the main key word you mention above is usually a competitive key word, which means a lot of web site are continuouly fighting to get a better position, even you get a good position in search result, it's also a charllenge to maintain that position.

So, a suggestion to you is to create the create content in your site, and build the natural links for it. And getting a good postion for a list of long-tail key words is not a bad thing as well, you might get more from them with much less effort compared with a competitive one.

...you have to get more backlinks for your main keyword and do better than your competitors for SERPS to rank well. Good luck

Maybe try to get more backlinks with that particular keyword in the anchor text?
I'm sure quality links from related sites will do the job.
