Is this marketing? How does this work and is it useful?

I have a fairly new blog. These days I see more and more visitors coming to my blog from with website urls attached as referrers. It is usually the main url of the website no blog post or page. If I visit those websites there is no sign of a mention or link to my blog.

Can somebody explain to me how this works and why this is useful? Makes no real sense to me, but i am curious.

There are many websites that will feature your bookmarks, etc. on their site, mainly gathering a whole bunch of bookmarks, and when yours appears on their front page, people will see it, but if they pick up bookmarks a lot, then you won't see it by the time you check the url.

it could be a trackback. There are other people who can add your useful blog post to their content as a text link, and you blog might automatically be set up to see where the trackback comes from.

This is a neat way to tell who's linking to your site. Conversely, it can be a good way to expose your own site if you were to do the same for them.
