I don't think it's legal if you aren't paying the proper rights or without getting the necessary approvals...

maybe you could have like say the teams, but the players names might be tricky. you would probally get away with using there squad numbers insted so it would be like

newcastle united: player 9 (obafemi martins) its only an idea dont shoot me if its a shit one lol

    good luck on the site

Isn't there an issue with this right now in regards to fantasy football? I don't think you can use their names.

I believe games like fifa and uefa cup etc pay big dollars to the teams and players to be able to use their names
Normal people don't really get into situations like these because they themselves aren't "famous" but most football players are well known and they (and their agents) will know what rights they have in regards to their names.

    Be careful with this.

    Hi,

There was an editorial in the New York Times yesterday about this. The gist of it was that the MLB sued a fantasy baseball company for not paying them license fees. The fantasy baseball company took it to court and won the case based on first amendment rights. So, for now, it is legal.

You can modify names but cannot use the real names...

i find it hard to think that you need to get the rights to use there names .... Fact is there are lots of sites that do it

Your best bet is to cantact a few sites that do it, and see what they say

However if you have a joining fee, then it may get complicated.

Not at all-only if you want to. In the US, at least, it is perfectly legal to use player's names without licensing. I mean, gossip magazines and sports newspapers do it all the time. The premise is that people have a right to talk about sports and real players without paying the leagues, and this extends to fantasy leagues.
