Is this how broad match works?

Hi, say for example i enter the broad match

    souvenier gift shop

does that mean that my add will also show if some enters just one of the words? i.e. "shop"

obviously I don't want my ad to show for something that broad ranging, I don't mind if it comes up for

    souvenier gift shop
    shop souvenier gift
    gift souvenier shop
    buy gift souvenier shop

etc, so does that mean I'm better off using phrase matching?

    Thanks for your help!

    Hi Teeny

from google help "With broad match, the Google AdWords system automatically runs your ads on relevant variations of your keywords, even if these terms are not in your keyword lists. Keyword variations can include synonyms, singular/plural forms, relevant variants of your keywords and phrases containing your keywords.

For example, if you are currently running ads on the broad-matched keyword web hosting, your ads may show for the search queries web hosting company or webhost. The keyword variations that are allowed to trigger your ads will change over time, as the AdWords system continually monitors your keyword quality and performance factors. Your ads will only continue showing on the highest-performing and most relevant keyword variations. "

The best advice I can give is to use all three at first i.e. broad keyword, phrase "keyword" and Exact [keyword]
This will give you the most traffic and will ensure your keyword triggers ads more frequently. After a while you will see (from the reports centre) which negative keywords you will need to add.
    Hope this helps
    Damien

    Thanks for that

I did set up phrase and broad match for the same keyword - but when I hovered over the Quality Score for the broad matching keyword - it said that it was not being triggered because of another keyword - so I didn't think you could run the same keyword for the different options?

    Thanks

    Teeny

you most likely will not show up for "shop" by itself, Google does try to have some relevance in broad matching.

You may end up showing up for terms like

    novelty shop
    specialty shops
    novelty merchandise
    gift basket
    souvenir merchandise
    souvenir t shirts shop
