I started a new website in the beginning of January. The domain has never been used, it is brand new. It was registered by me January 7th. I decided to target a low traffic phrase and see what happens with the phrase: 4,000,000 results in google 500,000 results in msn searched 98 times last month in overture I am ranked last on the first page of both google and msn for the term. Would this happen for any term with such little competition, or could it be from good seo?
the data is really a mish mash. Firstly Overture data is really not that reliable. Personally I would run a small adwords campaign bidding your phrase to the top 4 to see how many times it is really searched for. Secondly the volume of results is again no indication of the competition, you need to use 'intitle:yourphrase inanchor:yourphrase and to belt and bracers it try inanchor:yourphrase +intitle:yourphrase. This will gicve you a far better idea of how many people are optimising for that phrase.
I find overture not very accurate. Also there is a tool somewhere that tells you how competitive a keyword is........found it http://www.seomoz.org/tools.php
Then that is the true number of sites you are competing against. if a site doesn't have the keywords in the page title nor does it have any links with that anchor text they are hardly competition are they
