The Encyclopedia Spuria is driven by MediaWiki and I am using the default skin so I am not looking for a review of the design of my site. But, like all humorists I am plagued with the nagging question as I write things for the site - "Is this funny?" So, if you have time, please review the site for content and let me know if you were amused. Thanks.
I'm not good enough at English to know rather it's funny or not but if you wrote everything on that site then you have been hard at work. (-:
Your English looks good enough to me The site is a collaborative project open to all, which is why I used wiki software, but I have written more than half the content so far.
My English gets me by in writing but when it gets to stuff like this Words like spurious and uncomposed get a little beyond my abilities. I didn't find the site very funny but others might. I think the idea is great and would be a lot of fun but I'm not sure how to make it funny. If I was doing the project I would have to find some really funny sites and get an idea of how the writter went about doing the writting. I think this girl is really funny in some of her post. But I don't know how to write funny.
Is it basically a new uncyclopedia? Your logo/name in the top left doesnt fit in properly. I run some wikis and spam bots are a major problem, they spam each page, then blank it.
Well... yes and no. My site is a vehicle for invented characters and situations that appeared in correspondence between my brother over the last ten years. I didn't know about uncyclopedia or the Encyclopedia Dramatica when I decided to put The Encyclopedia Spuria online. The other sites rely heavily on satire and the re-definition of real life where everything on spuripedia is invented - which gives us a different personality I hope. That is deliberate. I haven't experienced that yet - that must be a real pain.
Spurious means "not true". Uncomposed is an invented word - the opposite to composed - but it is a word-play, a joke. You can't actually uncompose anything. I love the English language - one day I hope to be able to speak it properly myself!
If anyone can edit your wiki, how will you overcome the spam bots? If you find out a way, let me know, as I haven't found a way yet.
If you haven't upgraded to 1.6 yet you can get an mediawiki spamfight patch here: http://www.tektank.it/?page_id=25 I've been using it for a while and I haven't been spammed since the patch was installed. It doesn't work on version 1.6.x but the developer hangs out in the mwusers forum and will probably write an update soon. You can read about spamfight here: http://www.mwusers.com/forums/showthread.php?p=5395#post5395
