Is this enough traffic for a niche minisite?

Hello all. I've been toying with the idea of setting up some niche minisites since reading this article: http://www.netbusinessblog.com/2007/01/09/building-a-niche-minisite this article... I don't take this article to be the gospel, but it looks like a reasonable approach to take to get my feet wet with a niche minisite.

I've never done a "made for adsense" type of site, but I've been trying to soak up relevant info on the topic for the last few months.

I'm certainly not an expert in gaging what will perform well, but I've identified 2 topics: one is a cartoon, the other a comic book. They both have products that might make for good affiliate marketing (amazon, chitika, etc). And they both don't seem to have much competition - only 2 or 3 sponsored ads on the search engines, wikipedia entries in the top 3 SE results.

A look on the Overture Keyword Suggestion Tool shows pretty low traffic - but I'd prefer to start out small anyways.

I'm wondering, given the search numbers below, if anyone here would recommend trying to start a niche minisite with either of these topics (cartoon on the left, comic on the right): (see attached screenshot)

I'd appreciate any input. Let me know if you have any questions, or if I could provide any more info that could paint a clearer picture.
    Thanks!

When you query the Cartoon and Comic book in google, how much direct competition is there? To do this, just wrap your query in quotations.

For the search numbers you have shown, the left column maybe a good niche to focus on. This obviously depends on the results the Google query pops up. In my opinion, if the results are less than 30k, you should go for it.

You really have to dig deeper than just cartoon or comic book for a niche site. You really should look at anime cartoons or spiderman comic book.

Now these are just examples, I do not know anything about the topic.

With a blog you can get good search engine reals with competition oupwards of 100,000 but you have to have a targeted keyword.

@ eWebCreator - How would you define "direct competition"? There's not much in the top 5 or 10 SE results for either the comic title or the cartoon title that are sites dedicated solely to the niche, which to my (highly untrained) eye seems to give me room for leverage.

The comic (the one with less Overture searches) has virtually no competition, and I'm sure I could rank well quickly - but the traffic is pretty weak (but there are some tangent keywords I can target such as the artist name, publisher etc).

The cartoon has minimal competition and I think it's a great niche to get into right now due to some upcoming events.

@ stavra - Just to clear up things, my keywords aren't simply "comic book" or "cartoon", but they are a specific comic title and a specific cartoon title just as you suggest.

I think I'll go ahead and jump into the mix and just see how it goes. I'm open to any other comments, suggestions, etc. Thank you!
