I have the opportunity to buy a domain name (PR4) - its related to a site I sell, so I'd just forward the domain to my current site. It has 153 backlinks in yahoo (5 are .edu links, 2 are middle school links .us or something). Traffic is probably negligible at the moment. Worth $600?
If it's just for the links then $600 seems a bit much when you consider there is negligible traffic. I agree with SEBasic that the .edu links are valuable in their own right so the domain has some value if you intend to develop it since the .edu links carry greater weight with the SE's and could help boost the 'authority hub status' if you make a site from the domain. I guess you need to ask yourself whether you would be better served spending $600 on marketing like Adwords or whether the potential exists for the development of a site. If you can't see a way to develop the site somehow and generating traffic to your existing site, then it seems a bit pricey for 150 links, imho.
I agree with mcfox, if it's purely for traffic reasons $600 sounds a bit steep... Unless the domain itself is very good, but that's another issue.
#1 how old of a domain is it, fresh pr4 or old standing pr4? If it's old standing and you could easily keep the domain up and running while pointing a few links to your other sites I personally would debate buying it. Depends on the content though as well, is it a big time seller online or a limited traffic producer no matter how good the site? If it was a product that A is a highly searched term and B the site has been around for awhile I myself would probally buy it.
I was wondering guys what other type of links from domains such as .edu carry a lot of weight? What is the ladder of weight so to speak?
I don't think there is a specific "ladder"... But I do think sites like .edu, .gov, or .mil would carry more weight. This only makes sense since they are not offered for registration to the public. Therefore a link from one of these domains would (in theory) be more important, since only a select few of people could have access to them.
I once got hold of a PR6 domain that had a few edu backlinks and even a gov one. By the next update the domain was sent to google's trashcan and PR went to 0
According to Matt Cutts there is no ladder and the links get counted the same as every other one, which flies in the face of the info that's been 'out there' for quite a time, however, if you think about it; a .edu, for example, will continually accrue one-way, inbound links which in turn will generally boost the value of the pages it contains. Measured in PR, you could see an increase in 'value' since the overall PR of the .edu would increase as would the 'value' of an outbound link from that site.
Thanks for clearing that up Mcfox So the bottomline it's all about pagerank since a lot of these websites with .edu hold high PR. That is correct right?
Well, only if you measure the value of a link in PageRank, if you know what I mean. A site that gains a link from a .edu will inevitably benefit from PR the same way a link from DMOZ will positively affect a site's PR. There is also a benefit from spidering by various, lesser-known agents that may otherwise miss your site. Traffic-wise, they probably don't do much for you on their own but as a means of establishing your own site's credibility as a 'trusted site' and gaining the benefits that gives algorithmically as far as the SE's go, the .edu link is a good one to have, assuming it is a natural link.
This says a domain of mine is worth $291,335.49. Now obviously you have a lot of faith in your own tool, so will you buy it off me??
