When I go to Google webmaster Tools.

    I see :

    Duplicate meta descriptions 220
    Duplicate meta titles 217

Should every page have a different description and title?

Yes, every page should have unique titles and descriptions particularly if you're SEOing those pages.

Yes, try to optimize your Meta Tags as much as possible.
Make sure they are unique so that search engines will not mark them as duplicate pages.
Although the effect is not as bad as it used to be (description), but title tag is the major part that plays vital role.

You should always make sure each page has a unique meta title and description.

It is a great feature. They found a page where I made a mistake and duplicated the Wrong description.

They also told me that about 30 of my description meta tags were "too short". So I am going back and making them longer. In each case, I was just lazy, and did not write a good description.

Unique Title for each page - include keywords
Unique description meta tag for each page - include keywords - at least 80 characters
Keywords meta tag - all words must be in the body text

You do need individual meta tags or your pages are unlikely to get listed

I think its good if you have different meta tags on each page but it's a pain, particularly if you have a lot of dynamically generated pages...

You should have individual tags for each page. It is can help you in SEO. It helps the search engines find more information about your page and display it in their results.

i wouldn't go overboard in rewriting meta tags, but if you can easily make them unique do it. keeping duplicates won't help you, whether they actually hurt you or not is up for debate.

It's good practice if you have unique titles and descriptions. But if Google really care so much about that. Then in Blogger, owned by Google, they should provide the options to put proper META tags in each posts, which actually is missing. So Don't need to worry too much. But if you doing SEO on your site, then avoid it. :)

As everyone said - it's not bad practice but good to not to have duplicate title and description. Adds bonus to individual page SEO.

Meta tags are considered very important when it comes to SEOing. I have all different titles and meta tags for every single page of my websites. When people search for a particular thing, google prefers titles and meta tags on content of page. And people see the title of a particular page or article in the google list when they search for anything. So it increases the chance of getting the targeted traffic.

    Best of luck.

It is hard to say what the exact impact of this would be so it is best just to avoid it being an issue by following Google's guidelines on this.

If you are using Wordpress there are some very cool plugins that can help with this.

I have lots and lots of dynamic pages. I have a property search website. Lots of search results pages are indexed in Google. I suppose I can also dynamically put the search keywords in the titles and meta tags.
