I'm asking this cause I think Mashable are a Premium AdSense partner, and maybe this is not allowed for ordinary adsense publishers?

 

I think it's allowed due to the fact the ad space is clearly ad space (dark background).

Yes. It is acceptable. As per the google TOS, the content should be displayed in the first fold of the page. It is displaying the content also along with the ad.

 

So is it converting good for you?

 

It's the 2nd AD that is making money for me. the first one is under the post.
It's ok, i think you should try it, try using Quick AdSense if you are on wordpress.
