Ok, i recently thought about starting a new website... So i did some research and tried to determine what phrase i would need to use to get found in the search engines (using http://www.digitalpoint.com/tools/suggestion/). What i found in the results was: 153.0/day (Wordtracker) and 256.3/day (Overture) - does this mean 153 and 256 searches each day? I then decided to do a search initially on google for the phrase i am looking to aim my site at; iwebtools link popularity tool came back with a total of 156 total backlinks for the number 2 position in the SERPs. Surely i should most definately start my website as it probably will not take too much effort to rank #1 for my choosen phrase - and hence based on the results of the suggestion tool i can expect to see quite a considerable amount of traffic if i develop the site correctly? Your thoughts please...
No it does not, it's a comparative tool more then anything. To answer your question, I guess it depends on what you consider a a considerable amount of traffic.
Erm so what do the amounts mean? a percentage of some description based on the other results that are shown?
156 backlinks doesn't mean much unless you know the PR of the actual linked pages. I use a tool called Link Assistant to look at the PR / Alexa traffic for all referring sites to my competitors - it gives a bit of a better picture of what you're up against.
