I want to start a new blog and would like to get some of your opinions on if you think a niche that I am thinking about is a good one. According to the Overture Keyword Selector the primary keyword phrase received about 10,000 searches in September. The top 5 releated keyword prases received between 8000 and 1500 searches. Overture bid ammounts ranged from $1.65 in the top spot down to $0.85 in the tenth spot. When doing a search for the the main keyword phrase on Google, a PR4 site holds the top organic spot. According to the Backwards links buttion in the Google Toolbar, the top site has 14 backwards links. Spot 2 had 5 backlinks and the rest of the results on the first page had less than 3 backwards links. Does this sound like a it could be a profitable niche to target? If this isn't enough information to tell, what kind of other things should I try to find out. Any help would be much appreciated.
Sounds good, but the only way you will really find out is trying it The overture results and such don't always seem to be anything like reality. J.
first off, don't use google's backlinks to test how competitive it is. at least, don't use that alone. consider the backlinks from yahoo & msn as well-- they're going to show more realistic numbers. it's very, very hard to tell how profitable the niche is. sometimes bids in overture / adwords can be quite high but adsense profits can be very low. if you're not using adsense this may not be a problem. but it tends to be indicative of the quality of the traffic-- if the traffic converts, people will pay for it. does it sound like an okay niche from what you said? sure, I suppose. but before I'd invest a lot of time or money into it, I'd try to find out for sure how profitable it actually is. if you don't mind taking a shot in the dark and realize it may not pay off, go for it.
