Would having too many external links (that lead out of your website) effect your PR or site negatively in any way? Just wondering. Thanks
As far as I am aware it should be no more than 100 per page but I try to keep it at a bare min if possible.
Each link receives a lower value (PR passed). This means pages that link internally (your menu structure) give less weight to internal pages. This means you are "leaking" PR. Even though a page considered just by itself cannot leak PR, you are passing less PR from one of your pages to another.
Well, it depends. I have had sites where I just went out and got thousands of links from the start and it did not help one bit. The problem was low PR! It never hurts to have high PR links, but too many low PR links and you are doomed.
From what I have also read on this forum, I think it helps to use solid anchor text when linking out using a hyperlink?
Im going to make a broad statement about too many outbound links.... No - there is never too many outbound links as long as those links are related to your theme as seen in google's eyes. Infact, having a lot of outbound links to sites that are seen as authoritative by Google and other SEs, is a really really good thing!
As far as my knowledge goes, i never keep more than 50 outbound links as it would effect SERPS, i had read it somewhere.
There are plenty of large news sites and general resource sites that do EXCELLENT and have tons of outgoing links. Nothing to be too concerned about. If you're providing good info for the user...the SE's will think so too.
