    Hi guys,
I'm working on a new website and have been for a few months, we're considering adding a search function, the site is similar to AOL, Yahoo ect.. a portal type page with lots of news and services e.g web hosting, free email, forums, chat ect..

The search engine will cost quite a bit to develop but im just wondering isnt the search industry allready overcrowded by the likes of Google, Ask, Yahoo and Aol ect.. I see guys like Cuil who are new on the scene are taking off though..

    What are your thoughts?

    Regards

Depends what your USP is if your just going to offer what all the other search engines offer then no.

I agree. It is only worth starting a new search engine if you can offer something unique that will stand out. Making a copy of yahoo or msn probably wouldn't be worth it.

I think you should focus on the other aspects of your portal. It would be easy enough to add google search to your portal if needed. Then once you have built up some traffic to your portal you could revisit the search engine idea.

yea, there are so many good and famous ones out there, that it will be hard to make a new one. like they said, u have to offer something that no one alse does. u have to stand out with something special of your own.

Replica's in general don't work - unless you're an expert marketer. If you want to do a search engine, than its got to be better than Google's, Yahoo and MSN. Otherwise, forget about it IMO and concentrate on sections that will make your site unique and stand-out-from-the-crowd features.

I would think the answer to the OP is "YES". think about cars. The first names that come to mind are Ford, Chevy, Dodge, Toyota, Honda.... But there are many more that have come and gone! International, Studebaker, Chrysler, Lexus, Daiwoo, etc...
