Some time ago I stumbled across an article about Dotster's latest venture, PimpedEmail.com. Personally, I think this is a pretty brilliant marketing idea; Dotster is selling the same (boring) product they've sold for years in a specially designed package, through very specific channels, and for a particular audience. To my knowledge this product makes Dotster the first domain registrar to market to a demographic beyond 21-35 males (see GoDaddy's Super Bowl ad), and it seems like theirs is a product which really could appeal to a large group of internet users. Since this is such a new product, though, I'm wondering what others think about it. Am I crazy for thinking this could be a seriously lucrative venture for Dotster? The reason I'm wondering is because there's nothing to stop others (myself included) from jumping on board and offering a product similar to theirs. I'm a domain reseller (of Dotster's, actually), and I could pretty easily put a site together with the same gist as Dotster's. Waste of time? Brilliant plan?
I really dont see how this will work very well without major, I mean MAJOR marketing. I could maybe see it working ok if it was free, but most people dont pay for email now. Most people are happy with GMail.
The smart thing about this, though, is that what I'd be selling isn't an email account... It's a skin for their email address that just forwards to whatever email account(s) they designate. Still, you think that'd be pretty tough to do? Any thoughts as to whether Dotster is having success with their product?
