Of course there is money to be made, but I suppose that it depends on one's definition of money and what their model is. For a beginner to earn six or seven figures strictly trading domains is a long shot, since, as you know, short, generic .coms are all but inaccessible to mere mortals such as us. Yet, as a beginner also, I do see spaces where opportunity still exists for us to enter, such as brandable domains or geodomains, but sitting on a portfolio of domains, waiting to sell to domainers, no matter the niche, may not make the most of said portfolio as would the development of some domains within a portfolio to earn income either by sales or leads. These are some of the options I'm looking at in conjunction with the pure buying and selling, and as far as that goes, some good places to sell that I have so far investigated would be marketplaces e.g. Sedo.com or Flippa.com, forums such as DigitalPoint.com or NamePros.com, or emailing potential end-users. I believe the way for a beginner to make money is by thinking a little different than what's been done and working harder than we might have at first imagined. A good resource that I use to learn about domains is DomainSherpa.com. There are excellent interview there where the host picks the brains of successful domainers. So, as a beginner, I can't say much more than that, only that I do remain optimistic about domains.

In the real business world, there is a model that one buy cheap product and sell with higher price to keep the profit. You can always replicate this method for domain sales. You can find expired domain that still have PR and it has a good name then sell it on freemarket.com, flippa,.. These marketplace offer free listing, just deduct a small fee with successful transaction.

There's tons of money if you know what you're doing. If you're looking to just resale, then here's a few tips:

Buy only .com's (at least at first)
Don't buy a domain with more than two words in it
Try to buy shorter domains, as they mostly sell easier and quicker
Buy hand regs at first (meaning you register them and don't buy them from an auction, ect)
Join domain name forums like NamePros and DNF
Most importantly, do your research (Find out what domains sold, and try to figure out why)

There's also other ways to make money with domains such as parking them. 99/100 people will say parking is dead and you can't make money from it, but I've run across individuals that make 10K + by just parking them.

    yeah parking isnt dead..
its harder than it was but compared to the heartache of building and investing in a site that gman will carpet bomb with the latest zoo animal update
    and destroy your investment
    it looks like downright genius.
They keep saying that they want to only rank "real sites" and not spam-duplicate [parked] sites but they make too much money off parked and porn and so they never stay with the pubic "PC" SEO doctrine that they spew.
They also know that the minute they de-index these sites it immediately boosts the search share of the lilliputian competitors [yhoo] because they don't remove them...
so rather than let any other search engine make 10 cents
they say one thing but do something entirely different
