Is there anything i need to know about running an UNMANAGED server?

I have just started renting a unmanaged dedicated server running cpanel and i have transferred all my sites across and its up and running really well.

As it is unmanaged is there any routine maintenance tasks that need to be done or does it just run itself?

I have never had to reboot the server or anything like that so far i have had 100% uptime in the short couple of weeks i have used it.

If there anyway to backup the whole server incase it totally crashes?

i only have a single 100gig harddrive installed so would i need to backup each site individually?

Hmm since you are on a dedi and if remote reboots are free there is nothing to be afraid of. (I assume you are a designer so there is really nothing to be afraid of). You also have cpanel which is very easy to manage.(I even use webmin and sometimes no panel at all)

I login via ipaddress/whm and there is a bit where you can reboot the server either gracefully or forceful, however if the server crashes or needs rebooting would i still be able to get in to whm or would i need to contact the hosting company then? i think i remember them saying the will do free server reboots if i need it.

Well rebooting the server every month will help.

Do you have a remote reboot capability ? If not, you will need to contact your reseller.

You can always soft reboot your machine but when it comes to hard reboot it must be done with hand so that it can complete.

I assume you`ve remote reboots for free so there is nothing to be worried about and good luck with your new server.

    Hi,

no, Im talking about getting the physical control of the server to reboot it. If your server is jammed or compromise you need to have physical control of the box. Server reseller will often provide a way to reboot the server physically from distance. It is usually done via a special card on the server, via private and secured network.

Also, if you havent done so, you may want to install:

    http://www.configserver.com/cp/csf.html

    Great firewall and hack prevention

If your going unmanaged, you will be charged "per service" or by the hour. you'l want root access still and gracefully rebooting the server is a good remote administration tool. Some hosts may charge more at other places but generally that includes their support and time.

Remote reboot is like logging in your client area and clicking reboot i.e. outside WHM or such control panels.

WHM's reboot function is internal. If the server is frozen or crashed, it wont work.
