i would suggest you buy one copy if you are not familiar with wordpress, or you don't want to edit the source code as well. thesis theme has the most powerful admin panel that you can do anything you want, PM me if you need any details.

Thesis theme is indeed very popular precisely because it's a very powerful and reliable theme. I've tried it in the past, and stand by it
If you need to customize items it can become very "codey" especially when you start to use the hooks. You definitely need to have a grasp of CSS and some php in order to make it look how you want. (most thesis sites look the same/similar) If you have used regular themes and then switched to Thesis you will notice that the structure of the files is totally different. It can be a bit confusing in fact as Thesis puts its own codebase into the theme so its a real pain to find certain items. I am just completing my 6th Thesis web site, it will be my last. Its not that I "hate" thesis (well yesterday I spent several hours doing something that would take an hour on a regular theme) but I am at the stage now where I can design my own WP templates which are lighter and faster than Thesis anyway.
