I have noticed that some sites, with very similar content to a few of my sites, manage to get their traffic to shoot straight up (according to alexa stats), I know advertising has a big part in it, but what are some other ways to gain traffic quickly?
What type of website You have? There are lot of ways to increase traffic, and usually the "quick" ways to increase traffic is not very effective in the long run.
Do a backlink search on them for starters. See who all has linked to them. Did they also submit to DIGG? Type in "DIGG," along wth their url to see if anything comes up. In the beginning, JohnChow.com submitted to DIGG, which, I'm sure, has sent him a lot of hits. They may have put their marketing campaign into action all at once after they put together a tight game plan. For example: Once they have written down a list of "methods" they can try, they went into it 100%, nonstop. This can easily be done within, say, 12 hours. Also, Alexa may have had a glitch in their system, where it didn't show the site's ranking at first, and then, all of a sudden, it showed it, making it appear that site's traffic shot up quickly.
There's also a BIG difference between gaining traffic quickly and gaining GOOD, TARGETED, READY-TO-BUY traffic. Tell us more about your business. Don webforcesolutions.com bizbuildsoftware.com turbomaxsoftware.com
Stumbleupon works great. I was skeptical at first, but when a 1000 visitors came by from exchanging stumbles with people, I became a believer.
I have had the best luck from Reddit. But I write local stories and I hear that its hit and miss with geographically specific content as the neighbourhood clusters of users are diverse. Does that make sense?
I agree with the other guys. If you get quick traffic it might not be of the best quality. Stumble Upon and other social networks can help to get great amount of traffic but most of the times it's not steady. You can use them and get the quick traffic while you write a few articles with good keywords to submit to ezinearticles and get some more. There are many ways really. Vick
If you just want traffic and not target or quality traffic then try using autosurfs. You'll get fast results and most autosurfs are free to join.
Go for social bookmarking sites, specially stumbleupon. Try dp's massive free stumble threads, gain friends from there and so on..
Maybe they paid for it. If you put a million dollars into an AdWords campaign, you can get a lot of traffic.
I bring up my alexa ranking quickly by updating my site daily with new content/pages and stumbling it.
Lets start it off by saying something very important..... ALexa is not a true stat tool and it can not represent the number of visitors to a site. I can make a site reach the ranking of 250K and have under 100 visitors a day, I've done it so I know it's possible. My other site has a rank of 140k and receives 2400 visits per day. I know of another site that has rank 30K and only receives 2000 visits per day. As you can see the difference is quite significant. In terms of social networking and bookmarking sites they can help but in the end quolety is always the determining factor.
Getting yourself on the front page of Digg can pull in around 2000 visitors an hour, however that is often something easier said than done. I'd have to agree with an earlier comment, that suggested scanning your competitions back links for a rough insight as to where they've advertising their website. This would at least give you an idea of what you can do to jump start your traffic.
