Is there any value in appearing on subpages of a Directory?

Even if a directory has a PR of 5, usually its subpages are not even ranked. For example, take a look at: http://www.directory.ldmstudio.com/ Is there any value in having your link appear in the unranked subpage?

    edit: unranked -> PR 0

In my experience, directory subpages usually (but not always) have zero PR, so you'll get no Google PR boost. However, remember that PR is meaningful only to Google, but not to the many other search engines. If those subpages are indexed, you will get a backlink in all the search engines.

if you mean not indexed by unranked then of course theres no benefit from that search engine
if the directory gets a lot of traffic it may be worth it

I would say that there is value having your link on an "unranked" page, as long as its indexed.

    Id be more bothered about:

The other links being related on the page.

The traffic of a web directory could be quite impressive, but the hits delivered to the listed sites could not be so high.
As for the backlinks you get, a relevant backlink never hurts.

    I smell like link bait...

There is still benefit to those pages. If they are indexed in Google but that toolbar shows PR N/A it is likely the toolbar has been manipulated - to stop people like yourself from buying a link in those pages.

Seems, I've confused a couple terms.

0PR = Indexed = Backlink Value, but no PR value
n/a PR = Unranked = Not Indexed = No value, but direct clicks

I think I was mistaken by the fact that a PR of 0 is still a ranking (meaning google has crawled it), unranked would mean the page has a PR of n/a.

    Great answer, thanks Jim.

It's not my directory. Although, I wish I had a PR5 site even if it was just the landing :p

today a PR0 subpages can gain PR in the future, a PR subpage can lose PR some day.

IMO, you need check the overall quality of a directory to see if it is worthy.

Not true. Pages with PR n/a are often indexed - but shown as n/a as they lack enough unique content. They are "supplemental" style pages.

Of course there's value. Who really cares about PR. It has very little if any affect on whether you get indexed or searched for.

It would seem a directory that has 'earned' PR that high should have at least a few subpages with rank. I would be leary of submitting to any directory where only the homepage has rank particularly if it's on the higher side. It often indicates when a site has been re-purposed as a directory and on the next update will likely fall significantly in ranking.

Otherwise, PR does not come into play when I'm evaluating whether or not to submit to a directory.

It did used to for some in the past, fortunately i haven't seen anyone trying to promote on the strength of sitelinks, i feared i might see that as being used as a selling point, but not yet at least, would be a mistake i feel if that happend.

Great point Jim, it seems that everyone is totally focused on PR and forgetting about the other big boys. Granted Google is king and we all want google love, but a link from a site that is regularly indexed is always a plus right?

As long as the directory page is indexed, your link will help you rank for your anchor text regardless of the pr.
