Without knowing your site and it's link history, it's hard to answer this. As an educated guess, I suspect the keywords you were ranking for were affected by a Google alg change. Either that or your competitors started to use SEO and are passing you by. That would not explain the deindexted pages though.

Google recently announced that they would not be performing large algo updates with schedules, or at least not announcing when they do. They moved to a process of regularly updating algorithms on an ad-hoc basis as and when they feel like it. This will mean sites rising and falling for various reasons at various times.
The only thing to really focus on is when there's an announcement about a significant change, and it'll usually come from someone who has noticed something different and researched to find the cause. This is how we are expected to decipher when Google has changed something significantly.

SEO for Google still exists, only it's much harder to compete with their corporate friends and their own sales systems.
The same rules apply; create great content, be original and do things to please and assist your audience. Write a lot of great content and you can still get results. Not least with Bing and others. Google might be hard to compete within, but Bing is much easier to deal with.

Think of it this way, you can spend weeks trying to meet the demands of Google (which are mostly secret anyway) and get to page two, but for the same effort you get to position 1 in Bing. Even though Google has such a large share of the market, you are likely to get better traffic from Bing in position 1 than Google on page 3. It doesn't matter if 90% of the population uses Google when you only get 10 hits a day from it, in comparison to Bing having only 5% of the market, but delivering you 20 hits a day from position 1.

Google SEO is still alive. It just requires a lot more elbow grease. Before you could spam rank but now SEO is a specific skillset.
