Is there any significant difference between linux and windows hosting???

I am opening account in hostgator and I found they provide linux hosting for baby plan which I am going to opt for.

My earlier hosting service provider used windows platform for hosting.

So, is it going to create any hassles or issues of any sort for me if I switch same websites to linux platform???

If your script is based on PHP everything is ok, if its based on ASP it wont work on linux servers.

wrong, most Windows hosting offers come with PHP and MYSQL just like Linux ones(well at least Godaddy windows hosting does)
so there only compatibility issues I may think off in running Linux script on Windows server would be
    1) PHP system(), passthru, and such calls calling Unix commands
    2) May be some file naming limitation of Windows NTFS vs ex2f

sorry, I misread it, I guess I only pointed out conditions in which Linux PHP script might not 100% work on Windows hosting

Linux is also much more compatible with other linux servers should you choose to transfer your site somewhere else. It's an all-around good fit. I wouldn't go with a Windows VPS unless you really need it (have a program that only works on Windows, etc.)

Basically, the use of GNU/Linux as an operating system offers more affordable hosting solutions, better performances, more security, maximum uptime, stability and reliability. If your web-sites/web-apps are not an ASP (and friends) based ones, then you should definitely give gnu/linux a try.

linux is cheaper and more reliable but you should know if your page requirements need something that windows hosting can only provide.
