The only reason you wouldnt be receiving much traffic is because of the volume of searches for that particular word or phrase. For example a site may rank at #1 for search "kangaroo crossing", but if there are no people who are actually typing that into the search engine then - no traffic. (Yeah, I know a silly example for a keyword phrase, but hope it gets the point across). Use a tool such as the Overture keyword tool http://inventory.overture.com/ to get an idea of what the search volume is for your particular word or phrase
Seodigger will automatically pick up up to 250 (!) keywords from your site, will show their position in Google, and search volume at Overture and Wordtracker. From that you can try to conclude why some keyword was picked (title, subtitle, bolding..try to find a logic behind it). It is then wise to optimize keyword(s) which rank high and have high search volume.
