Yes you are a bit behind the times if link exchange is still your main promotional method. These days it is tough to benefit much from just link exchanges. Ideally you should be mixing in links from as many different trusted sources as possible. Submit a press release, submit some articles to article directories, build mini websites on web 2.0 sites, comment on related blogs, participate in forums that allow signature links, social bookmark your pages and pages with your links you want google to find, get profile links on high pr sites, get a video on youtube and other video sharing sites, attract natural links with compelling or controversial content, write testimonials for sites that gives links back, etc, etc, etc. There are hundreds of other ways to build links. Just cover all your bases and build a stronger link profile than your competitors.
