Why bother using old buggy obsolete software? If you don't want to pay for a forum license, go with a free option like SMF.
IPB 1.2 could also potentially expose you to server exploits. I wouldn't recommend using it. As Dan stated, go with a free package like SMF. Additionally there are a variety of other free forum packages you can go with, including MyBB. Check out OpenSourceCMS.com to try each of these forum packages out and see which you prefer.
SMF - Simple Machines Forum - SMF in short - is a free, professional grade software package that allows you to set up your own online community within minutes. Its powerful custom made template engine puts you in full control of the lay-out of your message board and with our unique SSI - or Server Side Includes - function you can let your forum and your website interact with each other. SMF is written in the popular language PHP and uses a MySQL database. It is designed to provide you with all the features you need from a bulletin board while having an absolute minimal impact on the resources of the server. SMF is the next generation of forum software, and best of all it is and will always remain completely free! I like and use it for my forum
Hi, I've only used PHPBB. Was easy to set up. If you use it, and you are able, let it use it's own database. It creates so many tables that you can't find your own anymore. Mike
Others have pointed out that myBB is very much similar to vBulletin, and the later is a direct competitor of IPM. So you may give it a try see if it suits you (myBB I mean). Would not recommend outdated software just because it's free. Unsupported can cost you a lot.
No problem, but I agree with what Dan Shulz and others said. Is there a particular reason you want to use an old version of IpB instead of newer, better forum softwares?
IPS has declared that it is illegal to distribute any form of IPB without a license. That includes 1.3, the fabled 2.0 trial, and all other versions. Just so you know...
Either forum software you pick up, free or paid, go for the latest version with all known bugs and security leaks covered. Beeing greedy may kill your website through that same forum..
Anyway I have decided I will go with vBulletin due to the professionability it has, can I use it on one domain and then change it to another if I no longer use it?
Hey , Kind sir . Glad that , my long before post could help you . Kindly have a look , at the following . http://catshideout.blogspot.com/2006/12/my-bookmarks-of-free-php-forum-scripts.html I think , phpbb is the best in terms , of all . And bbPress is the best in case , giving you the smallest footprint . Anyway , have a look , and have a nice day .
I like phpbb too. I like IPB release from about a year ago. But am sticking to the freebie phpbb for my own use right now. I have recently been seeing some simple machine forums that are pretty slick and new looking. I'd go for that if you are up in arms, they are going to going to have a growth spurt and more stuff will be available for them. Very nice
