It's MUCH easior to SPAM with sub-domains. For example, Google is too stupid to know that the sub-domains are part of the main domains site.

It's the same. There is some advantage to using a subdomain on an old site as opposed to a new domain though.

I've had fairly good results with a few sub domains.

hi thanks for the replies. i was going to start a site about all the recipes that i look cooking, and since they all have a category (cookies, cakes, bbq, etc) i guess i can just make them subdomains. i was thinking that there may be a difference if i wanted my site to get the most 'search points' when having something as a regular domain vs subdomain.

One problem with doing SEO between subdomains is that the backlinks you point to each subdomain, only account for that subdomain (as subdomains are treated as entirely seperate domains).. That's why I almost always end up using the one blah.com/directory for structure opposed to subdomains. The weight is spread around for the entire site when you keep it all on one domain.
