bb press is quite good consumes very low bandwidth

if you can afford high bandwidth then you can go for PHP BB

    both are free

i have used phpbb3 and smf forums. In my opinion smf is easier to manage.
The installation of mods for phpbb3 is time consuming. If you want easiness go for smf.
You can find really good themes for phpbb3, i decided to go with phpbb3 on one of my forum as i found a good theme for it which isn't available for smf.

Take a look at MyBB if you are just looking for a bare bones not to complicated forum that seems to work pretty well.

I would recommend PhpBB forum script. It is very easy and also free :)

Many forums start with phpbb and then upgrade to other scripts.

phpbb has lot of styles, but its difficult to manage, i think smf is the easiest one available.
