Is there ANY benefit at all from hotlinking?

Is there any benefit at all from hotlinking?

I have one site which gets it's images hotlinked constantly, to the tune of several thousand image downloads a day.

I just added a mod to httpd.conf to restrict hotlinking.

I am wondering: Is there any benefit to my web site at all to allowing all of this hotlinking?

These links directly to JPG's, do they give me PR or any similar benefit?

    Hmmmm....

You might want to consider the effects on Froogle and Google Images. Of course this depends on the business, but I do get sales from both of those sources. I am sure there is a way to allow them and restrict others though.

Stick a watermark on top of all so you get instant free advertising.

We put the website URL on the images for this reason.

You mean change the images and replace with a graphic of your website address and an invitation to visit. Ha ha ha, that should get them. I am assuming here that hotlinking is generally considered to be bad manners.

You could also redirect the jpg to a 100 MB .exe file or something to piss them off. Although it does waste your bandwidth. Or write a htaccess rewrite rule that checks the referrer to that file, if it;s not your own site, redirect to a picture that says:

"This lazy wanker of a webmaster is abusing my server, violating copyright law and being a prick in general."

Watermarking is the best though IMO.
