Is there another way to have a community besides standard forum (phpbb...) ??

I'd like to start a website that would basically be a forum, it would probably work fine with phpbb, but I find it hard to properly SEO a forum as opposed to a webpage that you can place <h1>'d keywords in it etc..

Is there anyway to create a forum that can be integrated into a webpage ?
I hope you guys understand what I mean.
I'm primarily looking for a free option, but I appreciate any info.

You could do a community blog, where users sign up to be authors on your site. Just my humble idea for you.

I have one client for whom this has worked spectacularly well. However he has a lot of interns, so that's a lot of free authors, you know.

There's always the option of a wiki-type system (such as mediawiki). It seems to be SEO'd as part of the application design.

I haven't used phpbb, but from what I understand there is a more secure better dynamic program out there called "punbb". i plan to implement this on my forum to see how it works.

    Happy Hunting!!
