Is there an exact character size for title and description meta tags

    Hi all,
I am sure that there is deliberate ambiguity in this but does anyone know if the is an exact limit to the number of characters in the 'title tag' and 'description meta tag'.

I am working with ranges 55 to 65 characters for title and 150 to 165 for description - which is fine but I'd rather work with exact limits.

    Thoughts.

    Regards,

    Hi all,

Thanks - but do you have a definitive source. I have been given lots of opinions but I am struggling to find a rule set. I am probably to anally retentive (no answers needed).

you don't need a source i think. just search on google.

    for example: http://www.google.com/search?q=hote...&rls=org.mozilla:tr:official&client=firefox-a

check the second website's description(ibishotel.com). as you see, there is ... at the end of the description. that means, description tag is long.

and check 8th website's title(laterooms.com). as you see, title tag is long, too.

just count the characters before the (...).

There's no set rule and you have to play with it.
As addlinkurl just mentioned some sites rank with long title so rank with very short ones.
Your have to play with it a bit to make it SE friendly and user friendly.

cutts has said that a title can be anywhere from "2 to 20 words" that's up to the webmaster but apparently google will index that much.

if you want to know how many exact characters will be displayed, more or less, just do any random search and count the maximum number of characters/spaces that are displayed. as noted, it's somewhere in the range of 65 for title and 150 for description but in fact varies (i just counted one today at 67 characters, so if the last word fits it may go to 67, most i see are less. & will do less so as not to cut a word off).

There is no set limit I think. Just use commonsense:)
