I have this one post that is pretty popular, and it's a little longer than most...around 2516 words. I have problems updating the post, when I add my additions, it gets to 2356 words, and the post won't publish...it shows up blank. Just a headline, and no content. Has anyone else experienced this ? Is there a fix for it ? Any help is appreciated, Thanks
I dont know, but its possible, maybe they have a limit set to prevent posts from becomming too large. Taking into account that media can be included within posts too, could all get pretty large.
are you sure the problem is with wordpress? are you sure its not your host timing out? if its a large post it would take a fair few seconds to re-post/update and if your host has post-timeout set low that could be the problem. (it could also be your own internet timing out)
That was the first thing I thought about, but I have tested it a few times, and every time the post came out blank. When I cut a few lines, it worked fine.
I'd have guessed that any limit would be imposed by one of: 1) the data type of the field in the MySQL database that actually holds the post; you'd need to find out that datatype and its limits 2) timeout issues If it's OK if you take some out, how does it go if you put that back in a few words at a time? How long IS your post? I can "write for England" on some posts and haven't had a problem so far. Update: Ah, 2516 words... didn't spot that sooner.
heres something to try disable any plugins that are related to that post and post and then re-enable (if plugins are eating memory then it will kill that bit extyra that the post needs) other thing you can try is install wordpress on your local computer and see if it will let you post it (or send me the post and ill try publishing it on my blog)
I tried it a few words at a time, no dice. Right now its 2300words, with photos and a video, when I take it over 2500, it blanks out. I was lucky enough to save it the first time it happened
Im guessing its maybe a character limit, not specifically limiting the words, but words combined with included media maybe having an overall limit.
It's not worth fighting. There are plug ins you can use to break up the article or you could just do it manually. There is no point in having an article scroll on forever. The Search Engines will not index that many words on a page and the reader who reads past 1000 words will click on the "next page" link.
I have a few thousand reads and a bunch of links on this article since it was posted 2 weeks ago, that would disagree with that. People are going to read what they searched for and what interests them. It's not a big deal. I'm certainly not going to adjust any code for one article. I can't for see writing one that long again. Just thought it was interesting. Why do you say that ? Before the links to the article appeared, most of the traffic came from a variety searches using terms that are spread throughout the article. Do you have some kind of documentation that say's every Search engine on the web has configured their algorithms and spiders to only index a certain number of words as a general rule for every web page that is online? That would make them very similar in the way that they operate, and I don't believe that they are.
I had exact problem with previous Wordpress versions. It seems they have fixed this bug in latest release - 2.7.1
