Is there a way using PHP to convert a pipe delimited filt to an xml file?

I have seen some possible solutions by googling it, but for converting comma separated files to xml. Would I just replace the comma in the code with the pipe symbol? I really don't know what I'm doing so I don't want to start down the wrong path having problems and find this will not work.
