Is there a secret to the perfect domain name?

I have bought a lot of different domains during the past five years, and what I have been thinking when I was going to get the "perfect" domain has evolved.

I would love to hear your thoughts...

I started out thinking that if I had the perfect domain name my business would almost be selling itself.

I was trying to find the easiest domain of all, for example marketing.com or money.com or whatever, because if I could find a word that most people were already using, I would get a lot of traffic - just because it was the right word.

Then, I started doing keyword research, in order to find the best keyword to use as my domain. I found good domains that were already used, and I added an S at the end, in order to be able to buy it. For instance, I couldn't get my hands on marketing.com or money.com, so I would end up buying marketings.com and moneys.com (this is just an example).

Now, everything is different, I don't spend a lot of time looking for the perfect domain at all.

I believe that it’s a lot better to have a short and easy to remember domain name than a long and difficult to remember name. And, I want it to be related to the niche I'm in. But that's about it. I don't spend a lot of time at all searching for good domain names.

What about you? How important are domain names, and do you spend a lot of time finding the right names?

its important to obviously have single word domains, or at worst 2-3 word domains anything more then that all you can hope is direct traffic via advertising or pray that someone will google ''howtogetlaidrightnowbuddy'' and your howtogetlaidrightnowbuddy.com will be there.

But in reality i think domain isnt as important as is ''the execution'' and marketing campaigns.

Rich is right. The most obscure domain name can get more traffic than ones that are keyword rich if you do the work to build your business. Do your SEO, get traffic, advertise with social media and PPC...all the things we know to do. Of course, having that keyword exact match domain gives you a headstart if you're planning that stuff anyway. But if you're not, you can't get by with the domain name alone.

    Good luck! :)

i believe a good domain name with good contents can give you a good start. Like i have a blog that has contents and everything that a good blog need but it lacks a perfect domain-name.

This depends heavily on what your intentions are. If you have niche content/product then the domain won't matter as much. If you are creating a web 2.0 property with heavy user interaction then you could probably even make up a word.

I made up the domain name Snipsly.com. Everyone snickered at me about it. And then I sold the website for considerable sum.

The bottom line. If you're building around a domain you probably won't do well. You have to build around a solid concept, the domain should be secondary.

    hi,

it is very important how to choose a domain name. The rankings are given by the domain name and the seo (onsite/offsite). Now its the best to have a one word domain name but sometimes a two word is better. For example if you sell a product that has its name made out of two for sure you want to go with that. whatever goes from there 3 and up i would not ever think about them. If you choose to have any chars like '_' '-' and so on.. its a big NO NO!! also try not to get as well words like 'and' etc. The domain name should be the best keyword that your website will relate and/or will be build on...

A good domain name could make the difference between 100$ sales and 1000's of $$ :)

Any questions about SEO just buzz me and i could help

    Cheers, Radu

The perfect domain is all upon your goal, if you have a SEO goal in mind, you should create an "exact match" domain for your selected keyword, otherwise, you must be creative, but not too much, try to get a domain name easy to understand, easy to write, easy to remember and that explain itself what your website is about.
Think of it in terms of "building a brand", my suggestion here is to use one single word (if you have not seo goals in mind).

It has to be a easy to spell name, and easy to remember. try to keep it down to two words.
Brainstorm names that match your business.

the best name is one that is easy to remember, is brandable, and can be pronounced and spelled out with ease.

I don't think there is such as thing as a "perfect" domain name. I do believe on "good" domain names: easy to remember, catchy, preferably with your target keyword in there, a name that represents and describes your product/s. This article on how to avoid losing traffic from a poorly chosen domain name can give you further information.

Hope that helps. Have a good day!

It can be very difficult to settle on a domain name. But i have learned that its not the domain name that drives traffic to your site, Its basically your content.
So, don't waste so much time scratching your head over the perfect domain, So long as it catchy, memorable and related to your content.....Go for it.
However, avoid very long Domain names

Other than making sure the domain name reflects the nature of your web site for SEO purposes, I'm not sure having the "perfect" domain name is that important. it's a good idea to have your main keyword as part of the name, but, other than that, it's all down to the marketing to drive traffic to the site.

If you can get an exact match domain with lots of people searching for it, then you stand a good chance of getting some good traffic, but ofcourse someone may just beat you to it

Nowadays all perfect 1 word domain names seem to be occupied and the perfect domain name would be a 2 word domain name that is really easy to read and remember

Yes, but only if you're targeting some "famous" keywords. Yes, in this case you'll never find a valid one single word domain and you should go with a two word domain (please, don't use more than two words), but as I said, if you wanna build a particular brand for your company, you can use a fantasy, yet valid domain name. IE: Fiverr, Google, Bing and so on...
