Is there a dummies book for monetizing a MySpace site?

As always, thanks for looking :)

I've done a search here to get some answers, but I guess I just don't "get it" when it comes to monetizing a MySpace site. Is making money on MySpace simply a matter of dropping some AdSense code into the pages-or is that just the tip of the iceburg?

It seems like every day I see people looking to buy established MySpace accounts with XX number of friends-are these folks just looking to take over the site and fill it with CPC ads?

My wife has a MySpace site for quilting, sewing, and dressmaking. No idea how many friends she has linking to her site, but I do know that she has a few thousand people in her friends list. If she wanted to make a few extra bucks every month should she open an AdSense account? I know that she'd never want to send e-mail spam to anyone, nor would she ever want to sell her site-she has far too much fun with it to get rid of it. Are CPC ads the way to go?

Heck, if she could earn money doing something she does in her spare time maybe she could buy herself a new sewing machine or something, and not feel guilty about spending the money.

Thanks in advance for any information or insight you can provide.

Edited to add: Wasn't sure what forum to use for this question-so I figured I'd play it safe by posting in this one.

I think I may have uncovered the source of your troubles :)

There are 2 types of sites and they are seperate one can be heavily monetized, the other, not so much.

    Type 1:MySpace PROFILES
    ----------------
If you go to myspace.com, you can sign up and make a myspace PROFILE.
This is (from what I understand) what your wife has.
the url for this site will be something like ...http://www.myspace.com/companyname
    or
    ...http://www.myspace.com/persons_nickname
    or
    ...http://www.myspace.com/3249789037875370

Now a myspace profile is something anyone can sign up for, write information about themselves, put up pictures, songs from their favourtite bands add friends etc etc.

    for example:
    http://myspace.com/jennyjenny
this person is just an average teen

Its kind of like an online personality where people may see who your friends are, what you have to say, what your interests are and what you listen to, what you look like and so on.

this is hugely popular amoung teenager and young adults, which a very lucrative market, so big companies and music bands and small biz (like ur wife) sign up for accounts, and develop their own online identity...
    for instance:

    heard of the band U2?
they have a regular website at http://www.u2.com
but they also have a myspace account at http://www.myspace.com/u2
for the sake of internet marketing to youth demographic.
anyone who has myspace profile can add u2 to their "friends list", great way for the brand to build a fanbase...

now the thing about a regualr myspace account is that you cannot monetize it well... its not meant for monetization...
sure you could pop a few banners for websites maybe an affiliate link or two
but you cant use adsense or similar CPC program because they use javascript and myspace doesent allow javascript in their myspace profiles...
    -----------------

    Type 2: Myspace resource sites
    -----------------
On this forum, when ppl say Myspace site rather than a myspace PROFILE, they mean a resource site. Now whats a resource site? A website that offers myspace users various snippets of HTML code which will allow them to customize their myspace profile to their liking. Resource websites are not affiliated to myspace and dont allow you to make a profile, they simply give you tools to make your myspace PROFILE more attractive (or sometime unattractive lol)

these sites are built from scratch by experianced developers. developers will then have to buy a domain, buy web hosting and drive traffic to the site..
they can use CPC programs like adsense to monetize

for example http://www.pimpmyspace.org allows on to "pimp their profile"
    and offers
    Glitter Graphics
    Glitter Text
    MySpace Cursors
    MySpace Comments
    MySpace Avatars
    Online Status Icons
    Contact Tables
    MySpace Layouts
    Smilies / Emoticons

    ----------------------------------------

    Hope that helps :)

    good luck,

    Hello,

I am not a myspace specialist, but i know the foolowing things for sure:

    - MySpace is a hard market
    - Your domain shall not contacin the word myspace, they will sue you (soon)
    - Offer things that no one else have
    - Many MySpace users are (n) in programming and all the stuff. So make sure your offered codes have an embedded link back to your site, they will just paste it.
    - Do not spam, their 150-employee team named 'Tom' will punish you well.
    - Adsense is all that myspace business is about, getting the myspace users into any new community seems to be impossible

    PS>
This is all based on tries i'v made myslef, if you do not agree, i believe you had it differently. So just dont shout.. :D

    Good luck.

Oh by the way, when people want to buy established myspace profiles with thousands of friends, it is for promotional purposes. See, myspace allows you to send messages or bulletins to all your friends in a few clicks...

if you had a thousand friends in anc account and you were promoting your new website bizibiziboy.com then you would send a message like:

"hey folks, check out this new website bizibiziboy.com, its soo cool"
you could also put a banner on the profile itself which would drive traffic to the website...

You forgot to mention, which is absolutley useless..
Myspace traffic never converts into leads, remember that, and you'll remember the words when you're into it :|
