Is the user reputation system accurate/fair?

Sure! Why not? Minstrel has violated everything else I possess.

My children were all born just about two years apart. Actually the third and fourth were only 18 months apart, so we had two in diapers for a short time. That's really a lot of fun.

I took my annual vacation when each of them were born, so I looked after things while my wife was in the hospital -- the hospital stay use to be longer in those days -- and was there for the first week or so after the newborn came home. It worked out ok. And you soon find out that the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th don't need as much attention as you really thought the first one did.

Judging by the thread someone started on how you shouldn't promote your site , I'd say they gave it a red because you linked to your forum.

Giving a red was pretty stupid as an example of what they were looking for was completely relevant.

 

Did they make any comment at all to indicate their displeasure??? Seems totally unjust to me.

edit: I just tried to give you a green rep but wasn't allowed to until I spread some more rep around.

 

I think 90% of the rep 'issues' will be solved if the forum software simply attaches everyone's name to it.

Then all of a sudden people leave negatives only if they have a just reason and it's easier to see who your 'green' friends are.

Unless the actual person that left it comes into the thread and explains it (fat chance if they didn't explain it in the rep), there is no way to figure out the reason.

It makes no sense but thats nothing new. At least they can't give you another one for a long time.

 

Oh, I know. Im not so much complaining, its more a good illustration of the topic of this thread. People leave bad rep for seemingly no discernable reason.

Again, this is why I have rep shut off on my 3 forums. Occurrance like this would just piss people off and start fights and rep wars.

Forcing the rep givers name would help somewhat probably, but wouldnt eliminate the problem I dont think.

 

In every forum I have been in that made this change it created different problems that created just as many threads complaining.

In the end, the only thing that would completely make these threads and issues go away is to scrap it.

 

I don't know if I've ever spent any time at any other forum that had these rating systems... not just the poster ratings but the thread ratings. I'm not entirely sure there's a point to either... at times they can be fun but there are just as many times if not more when they're just annoying.

So on the one hand if it disappeared I wouldn't mourn it's passing. On the other hand, the amount of bitching that goes on about it is pretty astounding when you think about it.

One suggestion: if DP for whatever reasons wants to keep it, just remove the consequences -- i.e., the disappearing live links for negative rep members (there are other MODS that will allow you to disable links/signatures on a per member basis if you need it for spammers) and the double and triple green for positive rep members. Half the crap that goes on would probably disappear then and if it didn't at least people getting dinged wouldn't be as upset about losing a point or two.

As for whether or not it is anonymous, not sure that will make any difference at all. Even the mods and I suspect the owner has given anonymous rep here and yes that includes me, both negative and positive -- sometimes I want to leave a extra comment (pro or con) and just don't feel like typing anything in the box.

 

I'm personally less annoyed by totally anonymous negative rep than negative rep which includes a comment like "you're an asshole" or "you don't know what you're talking about" and isn't signed...

Usually, I can guess who left the rep anyway...

 

We seem to have someone in common although they mix it up a bit...Mine was "you've been an asshole"
