I've noticed a lot of really old threads being bumped lately, and other people have complained about it. I'm wondering whether the "Similar Threads" box at the bottom of the page could be to blame. It can sometimes dredge up really old posts. Would it solve this problem to restrict the number of similar threads shown to those created more recently? Admittedly that restricts our view of older threads, but there's always the site search. I think it's important to get the balance right, and perhaps all these old threads are getting bumped because too many of them get highlighted, and it's easy to forget to read the date.
What I don't understnad is why old threads don't get locked or at least show a warning of how old they are before someone replies. Most threads get bumped by morons who don't bother to check when it was posted. Some are so stupid that they don't even care, like the one replying to a thread I started 9 months ago looking for a writer, as if I would still be looking for one
Nothing, but that's rarely the case. Search engines change frequently, as do websites, affiliate programmes, and a lot of other things on the internet. Most of the things we discuss change so often they're obsolete, inaccurate or simply old news within six months. I like Fryman's idea of showing a warning, that would be useful.
Oh .....because I was like wtf......I thought you bumped it...... Oh wait....I better NOT say WTF.....{runs from moneybookers club}
Agreed. People whine if someone posts without searching, people whine if new people ask the same question over and over, people whine when old threads get bumped.... Wah. Traffic is traffic. Be happy.
It was me who brought the thread up & deleted my post after there was some confusion about it being genuine. I brought up the old thread because i know for a fact that the 'similar threads' causes people to bump old threads in the buy, sell & trade forums & i find that annoying, i thought it would be better to use an old thread with support already established in that thread than starting a new one... Basically i said people view the 'similar threads' & then forget that some may be very old because they don't read the date, my mistake was to make a comment about how i don't read dates either & with this being an old thread my post was taken as a joke instead of a valid point, i was issued what i thought was an infraction as the email header stated 'infraction' & wondered why because i knew i had done nothing wrong, upon reading the link to the 'bad post' i realised how my post was taken so i deleted it... And after a PM i realised that i got a warning not an infraction
I thought you were being cute. Bumping threads isn't a big deal as long as it's bumped with a useful message. ANd not by the original poster just to get more attention to the thread.
Funnily Enough I reached this thread via the Similar threads box. I know its two years old but I think adding to this elaborate discussion would be better then making a new thread. I think its a very good Idea for the BST. Basically showing 2 year old threads in similar threads doesn't solve any purpose. Just leads to bumping and Spam. Maybe it could be disabled for all or just on threads created by Premium users? In the rest of the forum except BST it is very useful.
Funny... that's how I got here.. it was in the box after I posted my thread about it here: http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=2270862 lol
