Is the sandbox only for popular niches?

My new directory which is related to dating doesn't seem to be doing as well as my wholesale one is in Google. According to Google Analytics I'm receiving a decent amount of visitors but this is for long, random phrases that are rarely searched. For phrases I'm actually going for my website seems to be completely off the map. Was I sandboxed because my website is in a very popular niche or is it just my SEO?

When I develop an optimized niche store, I now try to do so just like any other e-commerce website. in other words, it should have a logical set of main shopping categories, followed by subcategories or product pages, within each main category.
