Is the position you get when you are first indexed a good indicator of....

where you stand? I was indexed yesterday in yahoo, no google yet and my position was #25. I built some quality high PR back links yesterday and my site dropped to #30? Is it too early to tell where I stand? My site is older, has a better PR, good content, and a good seo friendly design so I am kinda baffled at where I stand unless its too early to call this my position as of now.

Your current position is not an indicator of your future rankings.

You could go up.....or down....but be patient.

Is there a time you must wait after you are index before things start to level out?

Your site is fairly old, has good PR and unique content, and was only indexed by Yahoo yesterday ? Or do you mean that the link page that pointed to your site has been indexed by Yahoo, and not by Google ?

A day or two is just not enough to judge where your rankings will be. Wait for a while, and let it stabilize.

It is an old domain, has a PR4 but the design that was on this domain was real bad and other than index.asp, getquote.asp, and contact.asp.....all the pages have been changed and a lot of pages have been added. So, I am actually talking about the new index.asp. Sorry, should have said that before.

Most new sites that I have seen come out strong at first and then tend to settle down and drop in ranking a little as google indexes more content and links. But this can be easily fixed with good content and strong incoming links with proper anchor text.
