Is the Earth Flat?

A debate between an Iraqi "Researcher on Astronomy" and a physicist on Iraqi television. Apparently, this is an important question in the Islamic world...

Is there anyone else here who is thinking earth is flat?;):)

Wow. That guy is a serious loon. I really think people who are that far into their religion should be considered mentally ill.

You believe the earth is flat?!?!?!

Do you understand that you are using a computer right now? You are on the internet?

That's what most drives me crazy about religious lunacy. These people use all of the modern things which were created using SCIENCE yet they still deny science. Nobody is going to be able to make a computer or create the internet by reading some old religious book. They created these things because they thought logically and used scientific fact.

I can understand how people could believe all of the crazy stuff in religious books hundreds of years ago before we knew any better. But now we KNOW for a FACT that the stuff in those books is complete hogwash. Knowingly believing in something that is obviously factually incorrect is a clear sign of mental illness.

Whether it's Christian Fundamentalists or Muslim Fundamentalists doesn't matter to me. These religious people are in a battle with reason. A battle against science & logic.

Well you shouldn't, because it's demonstrably wrong. and if that means you may have to, for once in your life, question your little book then that's what you are going to have to do.

The sad thing is you know the quran is wrong, you know the earth isn't flat, but your religious indoctrination has prevented you acknowledging the blatantly obvious.

I am distressed by this kind of stupidity... It is not even an issue... Earth is not flat (Only Thomas Friedman thinks that it is)... How can anyone question it?

And after that He spread the earth.
    -- Sura 79:30

"And Allah has made the earth for you as a carpet (spread out)."
    qruan 71:19

"He Who has made for you the earth like a carpet spread out; has enabled you to go about therein by roads (and channels)...."
    quran 20:53

It is clear that quran thinks that the Earth is flat.

In all fairness to the intellectually retarded that follow the "Quaran", it took the Pope until 96 was it to actually publicly and officially admit that Roman Catholics were retarded at some point too, and that it was probably time to forgive Galileo.

It's gonna be a while before them Islamo people figure this shit out. They are a relatively young/primitive religion by comparison to the one true church.

Probably because all the bashing so far has been aimed at Christians. Now that someone has gone so far as to insult the beliefs of Islam, I'm sure banning a couple people is probably in order.

Because the moderation likely saw the eye rolling smiley and recognized that I drew an accurate comparison of the absurdity of ignorance amongst two religions. Both believed the earth was flat. One figured out it was not, and over a long period of time eventually recognized that fact. The other will eventually too.

If I were going to bash a religion I'd have to go a bit further than that.

Its become pretty PC to bash Christens and Catholics especially. Look at it from my perspective with all the priest/little boy jokes I've had to endure. You don't see me crying like a little bitch every time someone presents an opinion.

Oh well... Like I have been saying. If you have a different opinion than Obama, you must be a racist. If you are hetero, you must be a bigot. And finally, if you disagree with a religious ideology you must be intolerant, or in this case, "bashing it".

    What a friggin joke!!!

the Quaran says that its spread out like a carpet it never mentions that it is flat just because its spread out like a carpet you guys assume flat... Also this can be referred to the crust/land masses being spread out over the molten interior. But once again it never mentions specifically the word "flat", it is just an assumption. Secondly it also said that it is egg shaped. So this verse is more then likely referring to land masses. But i cannot for sure tell you because the English translation is alot of times different then the Arabic, and i do not understand arabic fully.

No, I'm not assuming its flat based on the descriptions in the "Quaran". I'm basing what I have heard by those who have interpreted it that way. This includes Muslim clerics, scholars and other such academics, including the OP's initial reference: "A debate between an Iraqi "Researcher on Astronomy" and a physicist on Iraqi television".

A good place to get a better understanding of the "earth spread out" references, is here:

    http://www.answering-islam.org/Quran/Science/earth_flat.html

FYI, I've never heard of the carpet reference.

For starters, its Quran, not Quaran. You're just here to insult and offend Muslims, thats all.

Secondly, stop posting links to hate sites. I understand you get all your Islam-bashing stuff fro there, but have the courtesy of not posting such blatant hateful stuff here.
