Is submitting to directory still effective today?

Everyday I research trying to figure out if submitting your web site to web and article directorys is still valueble and not a time waister.

Based on my research, back in the days it was the must submitting web site to directories, and getting 2 way links. But since google got smarter and no longer sees directories as a good source of high ranking.

Is anybody think or knows if directorys are valueble today and worth time to submitting to them?

And from 1 to 10, how would you rank directory submittions?

I would apritiate if somebody shares more techniques then just submitting to directorys. Thanks.

No one can give a correct answer for your question, because the SE never come out a formal algorithm mention whether does submission to directory helpful or not

at least can get some exposure to the public if the submission not effective for SE

it is good if you have time to do it

Every link to your site is a good link. Submit to the top 100 directories and leave it at that. Continue with other forms of promotion as your site slowly gets added to the directories since they may take a few weeks to few a months to add your site. Nowadays, directories are given less importance by search engines but they still count when it comes to backlinks.

Well a backlink wouldn't hurt but I don't think it's that effective anymore.

I don't think it does any harm to submit a site to directories - however I doubt it has a huge effect on your rankings.

Web directories - Utterly completely pointless!

Article directories - Very useful strategy, if not the absolute best way to build links.

Well I am not sure that its UTTERLY POINTLESS ! They do carry some value. Article submissions are important also. I imagine they are extremely important to YOU because your link goes to an article directory :)

I get really, really good daily referral traffic from directories - but only ones where I had to personally email the Webmaster with a link exchange, and only those that I found in the 1st page of the SERPS for my niche.

I get zero traffic from any reciprocal link directories that have automated systems and that thousands of others are listed in.

It does depend on what directory it is and whether the directory is related to your site

Experts please shoot me down in flames but directories alone did not work for us. I recommend aa wide a variety of links as possible e.g. directories, ezines, forums, yahoo answers, squidoo, zimbio, youtube etc etc

Submit on whatever sites you can. A link is a link IMO :)

I would consider them, for the most part, to be of minimal value. It helps to get indexed perhaps, but adds little to SERP position.
